On February 27, 2017, CGN Nuclear Technology Development Co., Ltd. (CGNNT) was successfully listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange through the restructuring of CGN Nuclear Technology Application Co., Ltd. and China Dalian International Cooperation (Group) Holdings Ltd. This milestone established CGNNT as China’s first publicly listed company dedicated to non-power nuclear technology applications, marking a new beginning and a new driving force in our journey toward becoming China’s leading nuclear technology application enterprise.

Nuclear technology applications utilize the physical, chemical, and biological effects generated through the interaction of isotopes and ionizing radiation with matter to support research, innovation, and industrial development. Often referred to as the “light industry of the nuclear sector,” nuclear technology has become an indispensable enabling technology across a wide range of industries. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has recognized that isotope and radiation technologies make significant contributions to socioeconomic development worldwide, noting that, in terms of the breadth of their applications, only modern electronics and information technology can rival them.

As a cross-disciplinary enabling technology, nuclear technology applications are closely connected with nearly one-third of the 43 manufacturing sub-sectors in the national economy. Supported by continuous advances in both fundamental and applied sciences, they promote industrial transformation and upgrading through integration with other industries, creating substantial market opportunities and long-term growth potential.

In developed countries, nuclear technology applications have already evolved into mature industrial ecosystems, serving a broad spectrum of sectors including industry, agriculture, biotechnology, healthcare, food safety, environmental protection, resource exploration, and public security. In the United States, the economic output generated by isotope and radiation technologies accounts for approximately 3% of GDP, whereas in China the figure is currently around 0.3%, indicating significant room for future development.

China’s nuclear technology application industry is now entering a period of rapid growth. As a green, environmentally friendly, and innovation-driven industry, it offers tremendous development potential. Commercialization has already been achieved in areas such as radiation chemistry and advanced polymer modification, creating a market worth hundreds of billions of RMB. As nuclear technologies continue to mature in emerging fields—including medical and healthcare, environmental protection, printing, and automotive manufacturing—the industry is expected to expand into even broader application areas.
